Travel to Balisage 2018

Balisage 2018 will be held in the CAMBRiA Hotel & Suites in Rockville, Maryland, USA.
The Hotel is 0.3 miles (2 blocks) from the Rockville Metro stop, and is easily reached by train, car, or from any of the three Washington, DC area airports.

Air Travel to Balisage 2018

Several airports service the metropolitan DC area:

It takes about the same amount of time to travel between each of these airports and Mulberry's offices. Many people prefer Reagan National because there is an easy connection by Metro.

Reagan National Airport (DCA) -- right next to Washington, DC

From Reagan National, you can get to Rockville:

  • taxi (probably the most expensive option -- approximately $60 one way[1])
  • shuttle (a less expensive option, with shuttles operating on a shared ride-on demand basis -- approximately $35 one way[1])
  • the "Metro" subway system (least expensive option)
  • driving

Shuttle options include:

For those choosing the Metro, Reagan National is on the Yellow and Blue lines. We suggest you take the Yellow line for "Fort Totten" and get off at the "Gallery Place (Chinatown)" station. At Gallery Place, take the Red line for "Shady Grove".

[NOTE: A second, but more lengthy option is to take the Blue line for "Largo Town Center", then get off at "Metro Center" and take the Red line for "Shady Grove". You can use this option in the event the Yellow line is out-of-service at Reagan National.]

For more information, see:

Dulles International Airport (IAD) -- in northern Virginia

From Dulles International, you can get to Rockville by:

  • taxi (probably the most expensive option -- approximately $65 one way[1])
  • shuttle (a less expensive option, with shuttles operating on a shared ride-on demand basis -- approximately $30 one way[1])
  • Washington Flyer Silver Line Express Bus and "Metro" subway system (least expensive option)
  • driving

Shuttle options include:

Dulles International has NO immediate access to the Metro system. The Silver Line Express Bus travels exclusively between Dulles and the Silver line's "Wiehle-Reston East" station and costs approximately $5 one way[1]. (For those familiar with the Flyer Coach to/from the "West Falls Church" Metro station, the Silver Line Express has replaced service to the Metro's Orange line.) At the "Wiehle-Reston East" station, take the Silver line to the "Metro Center" station and transfer to the Red line for "Shady Grove".

For more information, see:

Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) -- between Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC

From BWI Thurgood Marshall, you can get to Rockville by:

  • taxi (probably the most expensive option -- approximately $90 one way[1])
  • shuttle (a less expensive option, with shuttles operating on a shared ride-on demand basis -- approximately $45 one way[1])
  • MARC train and "Metro" subway system
  • Driving

Shuttle options include:

BWI Thurgood Marshall has NO immediate access to the Metro system. Take the free Amtrak/MARC shuttle to the BWI Marshall Rail Station (one mile from BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport); Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) shuttle stops are located on the airport's lower level terminal roadway. From the BWI Marshall Rail Station, you take a MARC "Penn Line" train (approximately $7[1]) to Union Station in Washington, DC. Union Station services Amtrak, MARC, and other rail lines, as well as the Metro subway system; after leaving the MARC train, move to the Metro portion of the station and take the Red line for "Shady Grove".

[NOTE: Although MARC also runs a train (Brunswick Line) from Union Station to Rockville, switching to the Metro subway system will get you to Rockville quicker; with fewer Brunswick Line trains, the wait for a MARC train will be longer.]

Rail Travel to Balisage 2018

In addition to being a Metro subway stop, Washington, DC's Union Station services Amtrak and two commuter rail lines (VRE and MARC).

Amtrak

Amtrak has train service along the east coast and into the midwest, and may offer competitive fares and travel time with airline flights. In addition, Washington, DC's Union Station is one of the terminus stops on the high speed Acela route which includes stops in Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. At Union Station, leave the train terminal and enter the portion of the station servicing the Metro subway system. Take a Metro Red Line train for "Shady Grove".

[NOTE: Although Amtrak also runs a train (Capitol Limited) from Union Station to Rockville, once a day, we suggest switching to the Metro subway system to get to Rockville.]

For more information, see:

Virginia Railway Express (VRE)

VRE is a rail line providing commuter rail service from the Northern Virginia suburbs outside the metropolitan DC area. VRE provides service between Union Station in Washington, DC and stations in Virginia, along two lines, the Manassas Line and the Fredericksburg Line. Assuming you disembark from a VRE train at Union Station, leave the train terminal and enter the portion of the station dedicated to the Metro subway system; take a Metro Red Line train for "Shady Grove".

For more information, see:

Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC)

MARC is a commuter rail system servicing parts of Maryland, West Virginia, and Washington DC. MARC Train Service operates Monday through Friday only, with the exception of the Penn Line which also has weekend service. The Penn Line (which is accessible from BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport) runs to Washington, DC's Union Station where you can leave the train terminal and enter to the portion of the station servicing the Metro subway system. Take a Metro Red Line train for "Shady Grove".
