I first met Michael at an SGML-related conference. He showed great interest in my presentation and we had a long and fascinating conversation. After I joined the XML WG, I continued to have various interactions with Michael, who was one of the co-editors of XML. I also remember that as chair of a working group, he was struggling with a difficult situation that was beyond his control. At the same time, he was very supportive of my proposed schema language. I think this was a true reflection of his integrity.

Michael's warmth, professionalism, and dedication left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of working with him. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues. May he rest in peace.
