from Elli Bleeker
Michael had a big heart and so much kindness. I remember my first time at Balisage, nervous and slightly intimidated because of all the “big names” I only knew from their seminal papers were walking around there in the flesh. But the way Michael welcomed us, welcomed everyone, showed genuine interest and a sense of humor, making me feel accepted and at ease immediately. It says a lot about someone how they behave towards those of “lesser ranking”, both in the academic world and outside. This was –– and is –– what makes Balisage so great, of course: there is none of that silly ranking business going on, and young new scholars are as gladly received as the prominent ones. But Michael was Balisage. It was an honour *and* a pleasure to have met him. His brilliant mind and his warm personality will be missed dearly, and my sincere condolences to his family and friends.
