I have attended many SGML and XML conferences, going back to the days that conferences were held in different cities. I was a Listener, as a ribbon on my badge told me.

I learned very early that Michael's closing keynote was a session that wasn't to be missed. One year, I had to leave the conference before the end of Michael's talk because I had booked an early flight. I never did that again.

I've been in tutorials with Michael and I have been able to sit at his lunch table. Michael always made everyone feel welcome.

Michael is an icon in the SGML/XML community. He will be missed.
