He was, in a phrase often undeserved but in his case so true, a gentleman and a scholar. He would have been in many ways more at home amidst the intellectual life of the 19th century, where both his manners and his scholarship would have earned a much wider recognition than was possible in the present time.

We worked together on XML technologies for a decade or more, and I like to think that we accomplished more together than either of us could have done on our own. I miss him, I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to say goodbye.
