Call for Short Talks
Cultural Heritage data tend to be complex and heterogeneous; they resist generic solutions and often push tools and standards to the edges of their capabilities. Complex problems would seem to demand complex solutions, but as Gall's Law points out: "A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked." The Balisage Symposium on Cultural Heritage Markup invites proposals for short presentations that aim to provoke discussion of how to design for and cope with the complexity of Cultural Heritage materials. Do you have a markup problem with no solution? Data too messy for your tools to handle? An ingenious solution to a hard problem involving Cultural Heritage materials? A heretical point of view about existing standards and practices? We want to hear from you! Presentations will be 10 minutes (or less) in length, followed by open discussion, brainstorming, support, sympathy, and advice from our audience of markup experts.
To propose a short presentation for the Symposium on Cultural Heritage Markup send email to info@balisage.net. Proposals must be received by June 19, 2015. Selection decisions will be announced by June 23, 2015.
In order to be considered for inclusion in the program, your proposal message must supply the following information:
- The name(s) and affiliations of all author(s)/speaker(s)
- The email address of the presenter
- The title of the presentation
- A description of the topic (there is no length limit, but note that proposals with enough detail in the description to be interesting are more likely to be selected than those that are terse)
- Disclosure of when and where, if some part of this material has already been presented or published
- An indication as to whether the presenter is comfortable giving a conference presentation and answering questions in English about the material to be presented
- Your assurance that all authors are willing and able to sign the Balisage Non-exclusive Publication Agreement (http://www.balisage.net/BalisagePublicationAgreement.pdf) with respect to the proposed presentation
- Agreement that you will provide the visuals/slides used in your short talk for publication in the Balisage Series on Markup Technologes
- Agreement that at least one of the authors will:
- Participate in the Symposium in person
- Present the talk and participate in the discussion after the talk
- Register for the Symposium and pay the symposium registration fee
