<biblioid> Biblio ID

A formal identifier for:
  • a work cited or listed in a bibliography, or
  • an author of the cited work.

Usage/Remarks

In this application, as denoted by the attributes used, the identifier must be a cited work’s DOI (digital object identifier) or the ORCID identifier for its author. In the first instance, only the @class attribute (with the value “doi”) is utilized, e.g., <biblioid class="doi">. In the second, both the @class and @otherclass attributes must be used, e.g., <biblioid class="other" otherclass="orcid">.
Display/Formatting Note
When <biblioid> is used for a cited work, only the actual DOI for the work, e.g., “10.2424/BalisageVol23.Usdin01” should be used as its content. (This permits the collection and transmittal of cited DOIs to Crossref, which will not accept a DOI provided as a URL.) On display, a live link will be created; the link will display as a URL with the generated text “https://doi.org/” preceding the <biblioid>’s content.
Related Elements
The <link> element should not be used to provide a full URL for a cited work. Although its use will generate a live link to the resource, it does not allow Balisage to collect and transmit DOIs for cited works to Crossref.
